National Black Forest Cake Day

Today, March 28th, is National Black Forest Cake Day…yes, there really is a national day for this delectable dessert.

The black forest cake originated in the 16th century in the Black Forest region in Germany.

I recently came across this Black Forest Cake recipe (click here for recipe) on a friend’s dessert blog ~ Desserted Planet and you’ve gotta check it out…and you’ve got to make her family recipe. She is a fabulous chocolatier – she makes the most unbelievable chocolate covered cherries (my personal favorite) and she is absolutely famous for her chocolate covered marshmallows.

As you know, I am a baker and I love a new challenge. This cake isn’t complicated but it does take time to make all the components.

This black forest cake is a moist chocolate cake layered with a rich chocolate ganache, sweetened whipped cream, and a sweet dark cherry sauce. I chose to use a chocolate buttercream frosting and it proved to be a great choice.

A little treat every once in a while is a fabulous thing!…so grab a cup of coffee and a fork and indulge!

Saturday Super Spa ~ Coffee Scrub

Image by ‘Professor Bop' from the Flickr Creative Commons

This girl definitely loves a great cup of coffee…and I’m right in the middle of a bold coffee journey right now.

What is so fabulous about coffee…the aroma. Even if you don’t drink coffee there is something about that distinct flavor in the air when brewing that energizing cup of joe.

So…what better time than Super Spa Saturday morning than to make an aromatic Brown Sugar Coffee Scrub? I mean Spring is in the air and it’s time for flip-flops and strappy sandals and no girl wants to be caught with rough winter feet. The sleeves go shorter and who wants nasty dry elbows…not this girl, that’s for sure.

Image by ‘StephanyF!' from the Flickr Creative Commons

This brown sugar coffee scrub is made with items already in the kitchen right now…Fresh coffee grinds from this morning, brown sugar, salt, olive oil, and maybe a teaspoon of vanilla and possibly a little cinnamon. Get a wide mouth jar and then make the scrub while watching this do-it-yourself video.

I mean a pampering, caffeinated body scrub that has major aroma therapy going on…and I don’t even have to spend extra cash on the ingredients! Slathering it on those rough heels, those scratchy elbows and getting ready to feel soft and girly and ready for Spring.

So wake up – it’s Super Spa Saturday and time for a serious brown sugar coffee scrub!

Once you wake up and smell the coffee, it’s hard to go back to sleep.” Fran Drescher

Fashionista Friday ~ Easter Shoes

It’s Fashionista Friday!

Easter shoes…love, love, love to get a shiny new pair for the occasion! Of course, I love to get a new pair for any occasion – Groundhog Day, Flag Day, National Pancake Day. If you’re a shoe girl like me, you know what I’m talking about. Put out a sign that says “Shoe Sale” and I’m there in a flash!

When my daughter was little I loved to dress her in her Martha Miniature dress with the little bell…and, of course, the huge puffy Martha Miniature slip under it, with an Easter bonnet and always a new pair of shiny matching shoes! So cute. Ok, she still likes a new Easter dress and shoes…just a little more toned down these days. I always dressed her over the top…what can I say?!

What is it about new shoes that make us walk with our head held higher on that first wear?

But some children of no shoes at all.

Which just makes for an entire sad situation when I look in my closet and see boxes stacked high, a pair for every need…and some that I don’t even have an outfit to go with yet – like the kickin’ Ralph Lauren ivory snakeskin platform pumps that I got at a recent 75% off sale ~ a little bit of awesomeness!

This Easter you can participate in Barefoot Sunday and share God’s message of Hope.

In the past you may have seen Coaches Without Shoes – as basketball coaches across the country coached their games barefoot to raise awareness and monies to put shoes on children’s feet through the Samaritan’s Feet organization.

Easter Sunday, April 4th, is Barefoot Sunday. Samaritan’s Feet is asking pastors from across the country to preach barefoot to raise awareness of the 300 million people who cannot afford even one pair of shoes to protect their feet from disease or infection.

This non-profit organization that brings hope around the world is also asking the each congregation take up an offering –  just $10.00 will purchase, ship, and distribute a pair of shoes to a child in need.

You may also text “shoes” to 85944 and $10.00 will be added to your cell phone bill at the end of the month which buys a pair of shoes for a child in need.

So this Easter instead of going out and purchasing new shoes for the fam…

…why not just get the old pair out and polish them up… and give a little bit of awesomeness to a child who has none.

Sunday Sweets ~ Chocolate Chip Scones

Brown Sugar Chocolate Chip Scones Warm from the Oven

Gather up the ingredients.

It’s the 2nd day of spring…and yes, we woke up to ice and snow…not my favorite…but what a wonderful time to stay in our PJ’s with a hot cup of coffee and a warm brown sugar chocolate chip scone with a warm fire blazing! Yes, this morning was that morning…and a perfect time for Sunday Sweets.

So I gathered all the ingredients together and got ready for a messy kitchen. Scones are messy – I just have to dig in with my hands and not just use a pastry cutter when mixing…but the finished product is so worth it. Light, flakey, scrumptious. I always use coarse decorator sugar to top my scones. I found I had run out of the plain sugar this morning but I do have red…thus, the festive red color of the finished product below.

Super Saturday Spa Treatment

Image by ‘FoundryParkInn' from the Flickr Creative Commons

Ok, it’s a Super Saturday…what a great day to visit the spa!

No $ for the spa? No time for the spa?

Oh no… what am I to do?

How about a do it yourself spa treatment?

A little aroma therapy, candles, soft music, along with a great exfoliating scrub can go a long way when you have little time or cash.

What about a great facial?  Make it at home with products you have in your home:

Recently I sent a day at the “spa” gift bag to a friend. I took a shopping trip to Bath and Body works for bath gel, body spray, matching scented candle, along with all kinds of pedicure products and those fabulous socks with the lotion in them…a great gift for someone who has a crazy busy life but could really use an hour of getaway spa time. She loved, loved, loved the pampering time – what girl wouldn’t love something that makes them feel special, soft, and smell pretty?!

I’m thinking a few minutes of getway spa time…right at home – is sounding good about now!

Fashionista Friday ~ The Scarf

Hey, it’s Fashionista Friday and today it’s all about the SCARF.

My favorite accessory these days is the SCARF. When I walk into a store I walk straight to the scarves to check out if there is one I just can’t live without. I wear a SCARF with just about everything from dressy to casual…and have just about every shape and size!

Love, love, love the fun that a SCARF adds to an outfit. Throw on a black sweater and pants – add a hot pink SCARF for a pop of color…you’ve made your outfit complete. A pair of jeans tucked in some riding boots…back sweater and bright purple SCARF…and you’re rockin. Throw a black SCARF on with just about anything…and you’ve brought your style up to new levels.

Did I say I love, love, love scarves? Check out these exciting ways to make anyone a fashionista:

St. Patrick’s Day!

Image by ‘laffy4k' from the Flickr Creative Commons

It’s St. Patrick’s Day! Time to get festive and celebrate with leprechauns, shamrock’s and maybe even have some corned beef and cabbage.

I’m sure it’s like a rule or something…the only way to start the morning is with Lucky Charms, of course – they’re magically delicious!

After the fun marshmallow and cereal breakfast…get your green on – as much as possible, or you’ll get a pinch. Although this year – I bought a fabulous Lucky brand t-shirt with a shamrock…and it’s orange, not green. Love it…but it’s not in the code for the office so it will have to wait until the work day comes to an end.

Break time St. Patrick’s Day party today and I made these decadent Green Velvet cupcakes to share! Oh, so good…and the green tongue that goes with the cupcake adds to the festive fun of the day.

Most days you can’t get away with bold green shadow…but today go for it. Watch here for some very festive tips with a little extra bling to give that Irish attitude and maybe help you find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

If you’re enough lucky to be Irish, you’re lucky enough!  ~Irish Saying

Free Coffee – BOLD

Behind every successful woman is a substantial amount of coffee.  ~Stephanie Piro

…and anyone who knows me knows my love for a great cup of coffee.

Image by ‘one2c900d' from the Flickr Creative Commons

It hasn’t always been that way…it all started with the gas station putting in a cappuccino machine. You know the one – starts with a powdery mix and water – way too much sugar and fat – but really taste great. Ok…so at the time I thought it really was great. I started with a mocha, then french vanilla…and the love grew from there.

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking…that’s not a great cup of coffee. And yes, I agree. I don’t think I could drink a gas station cappuccino these days…just couldn’t do it. But it is where I got my coffee training wheels.

Today I have a DeLonghi espresso machine at home, a Westbend espresso maker in my office – and for those days when I am needing a tall frosty frappuccino I have a Mr. Coffee Café Frappe maker.

I also make the best chocolate espresso cake ever…ask anyone. One bite and you’re in chocolate heaven. Non-coffee lovers love this cake.

I have the Starbucks mapped out on my smartphone for every road trip and plan my route accordingly.

Great coffee is even better when it’s FREE!

Starbucks has a campaign going on right now. They invite you to take a Coffee Journey. Details: Starbucks invites customers on an eight-week Bold Coffee Journey.

Image by ‘asheblogs' from the Flickr Creative Commons

A free pound of BOLD coffee…sweet deal for sure. You’ll need to hurry in and start your journey – week 1 started March 8th and week 2 will be here before you know it!

I’ve decided to go on this BOLD journey….are you coming along on the adventure?
